Macramé, popular in the 1970s, has been a hot wedding styling trend for a while now and I’m loving it! Although it’s not a combination you may immediately think of, using tropical wedding styling with macramé elements creates something incredible, as you’ll see in this fabulous shoot.
Styled by the very talented Fringe and Fray, this concept gives a modern nod to bohemian style. An abundance of lush palm leaves, including the popular Split Leaf Philodendron, add an amazing sense of the topics, and the incredible macramé backdrop bordered with leaves is a wonderful focal point for the styling.
Bold pops of blue, pink and mauve, together with the tropical oversized palm leaves, look great against the natural stone walls of the venue, and the eclectic mix of styling props lincluding rugs, cushions, candles, vases and demijohns create a cosy vibe.
For me though, the macramé pieces really are the stars of the show; from the magnificent backdrop to the macramé tied bouquet, macramé covered jars to the macramé doilies and table runner. Talking of the table, this looks great with the macramé touches, vases of tropical palm leaves, candles, and place settings with handmade dyed napkins. The most wonderful tie-dyed circular backdrop also features which, suspended from the ceiling, looks almost tipi-like.

Bohemian ’70s Vibe
“Taking inspiration from all things ’70s and laid-back, we pushed ourselves to come up with an eclectic mix of elements that we all loved.
“For this wedding shoot our key points of inspiration came firstly in the shape of the awesome macramé pieces. Hugely popular in the ’70s, macramé has seen a resurgence in the past couple of years. Fibre artist Jenny Collier from Fringe & Fray wanted to create a bohemian ’70s vibe using her macramé pieces, which was our main starting point. Other talented artists, including textile artist Mia Sylvia, created handmade and naturally dyed ethical fabrics and fashions. Tie-dye effects on the fabrics gave a nod to our ’70s vibe.
“Our location, The Crypt at The Halls Norwich, is a great little secret venue. The outside finds its way into the medieval ruins topped with a glass roof, with lots of ivy and brambles cascading down the crumbly walls. We wanted to show couples their wedding venue shouldn’t restrict their theme; just because we had a medieval venue didn’t mean we had to go along the lines of a rustic vintage theme. You can think outside of the box.
“We were keen to use bold pops of colour to go with a tropical theme and the oversized palm leaves were a must, giving the feel of some place much warmer. On the day we couldn’t stop laughing that we had picked the day of England’s freeze over. The snow was never ending and making its way inside the building, a massive contrast to our tropical plans!”
