A Tutbury Castle Wedding with a Medieval Handfasting Ceremony

This post A Tutbury Castle Wedding with a Medieval Handfasting Ceremony first appeared on The Wedding Community Blog

Oh how we love these pictures by Liga Stevenson Photography of Victoria and Dane’s amazing Tutbury Castle wedding. Victoria and Dane decided to express their love of vintage throughout their wedding, and styled their wedding with cute handmade items including bunting, a vintage suitcase card box, pictures, signs and flowers. They even had their own beer created for their guests to enjoy, ‘Williamson Wedding Ale’.

During the afternoon celebrations their guests enjoyed drinks, fun and games in the castle grounds; how we love to see a hula hooping bride and groom!

In the evening, Victoria and Dane has a Medieval handfasting ceremony, where their hands were bound with cord and a knot formed. This type of ceremony is part of the Medieval history of Tutbury Castle, so it’s lovely to see the pictures of such a special and unique ceremony being performed.

We hope you enjoy browsing through these fabulous pictures.

Vintage, British Style

“Our Tutbury Castle wedding was themed along a vintage, British style. Most things were homemade, with both families and friends playing a big part in the whole day coming together.

“There were lots of games to be played for the children and adults alike. Our fist dance was to ‘Heaven’ by Bryan Adams, which was playing when we got engaged at New Year 2016.

Medieval Handfasting Ceremony

“We had a Medieval handfasting ceremony when the sun had gone down. This consists of binding the hands with cord, wrapping it around both hands, and then taking the cord off to form a knot. This is to show the unbreakable bond, and it’s rumoured to potentially be the origin of “tying the knot”. You also both drink from the same cup and light one candle from two individual ones, which symbolises the unity together as one. Finally, the couple jump a broom to symbolise their jumping from an old life to a new life.”
