Our congratulations go to Melanie of Memories and Milestones Photography, after you voted this superb picture our September 2018 Picture of the Month. Melanie told us that when Natasha and Rob booked their wedding they had no idea the Torbay Air Show was on the same day. This meant their guests were treated to an airborne display that included The Red Arrows…

Quite a Challenge

“Natasha and Rob’s ceremony took place at Kingskerswell Church, with their reception back at The Imperial Hotel in Torquay. With a perfect view over the bay, guests mingled on the terrace over welcome drinks whilst aircraft of various sizes (and loudness) put on an amazing display.

“Natasha and Rob said that they would like a photo of them watching The Red Arrows, but at speeds of up to 645mph this was going to be quite a challenge! Firstly, it was tricky getting the jets in the same frame as the couple, as they fly past in a split second. Secondly, I had to shoot with a very narrow aperture in order for both the couple and the planes to be in focus. This is the opposite to how I would normally shoot couple portraits – with a soft, blurry background.

“I went with Natasha and Rob onto their private roof-top terrace off the bridal suite in order to get the best view, and shot away for about five minutes as they watched the start of The Red Arrows display. Once I was happy that I’d captured the ‘must-have shot’ I left them to enjoy those few precious moments alone as Mr and Mrs. Natasha and Rob were thrilled with the end result – a truly unique wedding photo!”
