Character/Movie Themed Wedding Cakes

This post Character/Movie Themed Wedding Cakes first appeared on The Wedding Community Blog

After seeing Ilona’s incredible Marvel wedding cake in our recent Getting to Know Tiers of Happiness feature, it gave us the idea of creating an inspiration board of really cool character/movie themed wedding cakes.

If you both love a movie, comic or Disney character, then why not forget the traditional wedding cake and inject some of your personalities with a super-cool themed wedding cake. This will really wow your wedding guests and give them something to talk about. From Alice in Wonderland to Up, Lady and the Tramp to Marvel comic characters, you can really have something spectacular.

If you can’t agree on one cake design then how about different characters or movies on each each? Or for a different take on the double sided cake – just when your guests thought you had opted for a traditional wedding cake, ‘bam’, they see the movie characters coming through the other side!

We found so many, but these are six of our favourite character/movie themed wedding cakes. Which is your favourite?

This post PapaKåta Spring 2016 Open Weekend first appeared on The Wedding Community Blog

PapaKata Spring 2016 Open Weekend

The PapaKåta spring 2016 open weekend takes place on the 19th and 20th March at the Escrick Park Estate near York, where some of 2016’s top wedding trends will come to life in their gorgeous tipis and Sperry tents.

With many couples seeking an authentic wedding day experience, one of PapaKåta’s 2016 wedding trends is authenticity – old-fashioned quality, natural surroundings, honest sharing food, textural materials and stylish yet simple details.

Papaka Sperry Tent

With a clean palette and beautiful green foliage, the tipis and Sperry tents will be organically styled, with pops of pastel colour added using Rose Quartz and Serenity, Pantone’s 2016 Colours of the Year.

The PapaKåta team will be showing you how to give a sense of nature and warmth to any wedding by bringing the outside into their tents. Hanging frames and floral crowns are just some of the bespoke fixtures they have created that can be decorated with florals and foliage.

Poppy Pickering Cakes

Lucy MacNicholl Floral Design will be creating beautiful floral designs in the tipis, and wedding cake designer Poppy Pickering will be showcasing some of her delectable creations. Working the key Pantone shades into calm green foliage, Firenza Floral Design will be styling their Sperry tent, including designing statement floral chandeliers.

Decor wise, tablescapes will include rustic-luxe details, and PapaKåta has added some new pieces to their on-trend finishing touches to help couples create a wedding chill-out lounge with a laid-back and homely feel.

PapaKata Chill Out Area

PapaKåta will be introducing the popular 4m circular oak bar into their tipis, creating a show-stopping bar tent where Speakeasy Libations will be shaking up some inventive cocktails, as well as adding a super-stylish prosecco bar in the Sperry tent. Taking the feast back to its roots, Feast Yorkshire will be serving delicious family-style food sourced round and about Yorkshire.

PapaKata Bar

The PapaKåta spring 2016 open weekend is the perfect opportunity to step inside the tips and Sperry tents and discuss the finer details of your wedding with the PapaKåta team. Appointments are recommended, and can be booked for either Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm by calling 01904 702100.

Getting to Know – Tina Smyth Wedding Design

Tina Smyth Wedding Design Logo

Interview with: Tina Smyth

Company Name: Tina Smyth Wedding Design

Website: www.tsweddingdesign.com

Location / Coverage: London and the Home Counties

What does Tina Smyth Wedding Design do?

At Tina Smyth Wedding Design we are known for our personal, bespoke approach to our wedding planning service. With a long standing background in the hospitality industry, it was always important to me that my couples feel looked after, both during the planning process and the wedding day itself, and this describes best how we work. We do everything for our couple. Our services and the planning process are entirely tailored to our couples and their lifestyle/schedule, and we purposely limit the number of weddings we look after each year so we can continue offer the personal service we have become known for.

Wedding styling by Tina Smyth Wedding Design

Have you always been interested in weddings and wanted to be a wedding planner?

Yes, always. I started my working career a rather long time ago in hospitality and I could not imagine doing anything else! I love what I do.

How did Tina Smyth Wedding Design come about and how long has the business been going?

I have been in the event and wedding industry now for over 11 years, both here in the UK and in Germany, and starting my very own planning service was ultimately always my dream. I eventually braved it and launched Tina Smyth Wedding Design, encouraged by adamant former clients and industry colleagues. I have not looked back since and Tina Smyth Wedding Design continues to look after weddings and other celebrations with great pride and joy.

Which areas of the UK do you cover? Do you offer your services outside of the UK?

I mainly operate in London and the Home Counties, but would venture further afield if required.

What services can Tina Smyth Wedding Design offer to couples planning their wedding?

As each and every wedding is unique, a tailored proposal will be prepared outlining our services after the initial complimentary consultation. To give you a brief overview of our services, I have summarised these below:

The service we have been best known for is our full planning service i.e. supporting our couple every step of the way of the wedding journey – from the venue search, contract negotiating with selected suppliers, general wedding etiquette and being by your side on the day itself – we do it all.

We also offer a partial planning service which is perfect for couples who have arranged the majority of the day themselves and just want us to oversee final arrangements to make sure nothing has been overlooked. For this service we are also there with our couple on the day. You’d be surprised how many things come up in the last weeks before the big day!

And lastly, our consultation service is where our little black book that is bursting with contacts of the best suppliers in town comes in – we help you find the right team of suppliers for your day.

Wedding ceremony seating

Why should a couple choose to use Tina Smyth Wedding Design to help them plan their big day?

I feel the best way to learn more about me and how I work is by hearing what my previous brides and grooms say about me.

The testimonial below by Kareen and Peter describes how I work best:

“Tina not only did her job outstandingly well but she also put her heart in it, and that made the whole difference.”

Have you taken part in any wedding planner training or courses?

Over the 11 years that I have been in the industry I have attended several industry related courses and projects.

Wedding floral arrangements planned by Tina Smyth Wedding Design

Which part of helping to plan a wedding do you enjoy the most and why?

On the day itself it is the moment when the couple kick off their shoes and dance the night away! Leading up the day, I love seeing it all come together – the table sample viewing, adding little bespoke surprises for my couple, hosting the menu tasting etc. It is hard to choose just one moment!

Do you have a specific style of wedding that you like to help create?

No, I work with the couple’s preferences and together we’ll create a look and style for the day. I do have a weakness for beautiful stationery and flowers though…

Wedding styling by Tina Smyth Wedding Design

What are the best and worst things about being a wedding planner?

Seeing a happy bride and groom at the end of a long day genuinely still makes my day, and that’s what I thrive for. Worst things – I cannot really name anything there. I have been rather lucky so far.

What is your most memorable experience of planning one of your clients’ weddings?

Summer 2015 seemed to have brought back a strong interest for fireworks and pyrotechnic displays. I loved how at one particular summer wedding on the grounds of one of the Royal Palaces, the cake cutting took place late in the evening outside, and guests were surprised with a pyrotechnics display that was synchronized to Frank Sinatra’s ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ as the couple cut into their cake… the guests were completely blown away as it was a surprise and we managed to keep it that until the very moment. It was rather magical.

Bride and groom watching fireworks

What’s your top tip for having the perfect wedding?

On the day itself, there will be so many of your family and friends wanting to congratulate you and there will be generally a lot going on. Try and take five minutes with your new husband/wife and just take it all in.

What do you think the top wedding trends will be for 2016?

I think we will see a lot more personalised weddings. Brides are setting trends by simply incorporating more of their own personal style and lifestyle into their big day. From the gown that does not need to be white/ivory anymore, but instead can be a beautifully bold floral pattern, to the colour palette for the look of the day itself. I am also seeing a lot of US inspired props coming on the market – a lot of blush/copper but also rather contemporary statement colour combinations such as black and white. 2016 is the year to be creative and to be brave!

Gold glitter wedding place setting styled by Tina Smyth Wedding Design

Random question… If you could organise anyone’s wedding, who would it be and why?

I love a real ‘foodie’ couple. I adore nothing more than getting into the menu design, unusual Canape presentations etc that will leave your guests wowed and talking about the day for a long time to come!

Where can I find out more about Tina Smyth Wedding Design?

Do come by www.tsweddingdesign.com to have a look at our latest work and for an idea of our services, or contact me directly on tina@tsweddingdesign.com or 0208/5492482. I would love to hear from you!

10 Hen Party Games to Break the Ice

This post 10 Hen Party Games to Break the Ice first appeared on The Wedding Community Blog

Girls on hen party

Organising a hen do with a group of potential strangers, whose only thing in common is the bride-to-be, can be daunting. Will the girls get along? Will there be enough to keep them entertained? Will there be awkward silences? Or will the room be filled with love and laughter?

Leading European hen party organiser Eventhuse has shared 10 icebreaker hen party games to get the laughter rolling…

The Introduction Game

Turn your hen party introductions into a game

At a hen party where not everyone knows each other, a fun, sweet and easy way to break the ice from the offset is by turning the awkward introduction phase into a game. Once everyone’s been given a glass of champagne, take it in turns to introduce yourselves to everyone else in the group with a list of fun pre-determined criteria, for example: Your name, how you know the bride, and the three things you like best about her – or something to that effect!

Mr & Mrs Quiz

How well does the bride-to-be really know her man?

To prepare for the Mr and Mrs Quiz, before the hen do the bridesmaids must meet up with the groom, ask him a series of questions and get his honest answers. Once you’re all gathered for the party, pop open a bottle of bubbly and ask your bride-to-be to guess the answers to each of her fiancé’s questions, to see how well she really knows her man.

Think outside the box and don’t be afraid to ask some hilarious or even risqué questions which will guarantee a bigger laugh when it’s playtime. To add an extra touch to this game (and if you have the equipment) film the groom-to-be as he answers each question and show the film at the hen do.

Never Have I Ever

A classic drinking game that almost every hen will remember from their student days

The rules are simple, each person in the group takes it in turn to admit to something they have never done, like this: ‘Never have I ever… fancied my school teacher’ or something along those lines (it can get as naughty or racy as you like!). Anyone in the group who has ever done the thing mentioned has to take a sip of their drink.

As you can imagine, some will end up drinking more than others, and the screams of laughter as you learn things you never knew about your best friends will be heard from miles away!

Dress the Bride

For the bride-to-be who isn’t afraid of making a bit of a fool of herself

This game is a fun and lively way to break the ice at a hen party. Pre-hen do, ask all the girls coming to bring a couple of items of fancy dress (the sillier and more extravagant the better), then at the actual event split the group into two teams and take it in turns to dress the bride in the most ridiculous outfit you can create. This also makes for excellent photo opportunities of the bride dressed in sequins, leotards, unicorn horns, wigs and feathers.

Pin the Tail on the Male

An adult twist on the party game classic

Before the hen do, get or take a good quality photograph of the groom-to-be standing up facing the camera, then have the picture enlarged and bring it with you to the party. Once the gaming session begins, stick your life-size pin up photo of the brides fiancé to the wall then blindfold each person in turn and get them to pin the tail (or other bodily appendage) on the male!

Tell Me a Story

A game of hen party guess who

Another good one for breaking the ice and giving the group an opportunity to really get to know each other is to ask all the hens to write down a story about themselves, without divulging who they are. All hens should place their story in a hat, mix up the pieces of paper and get the bride-to-be to read out each story one by one and try to guess whose it is. The stories can be as embarrassing, weird, wacky or x-rated as you want them to be, but just a tip – the more unusual and funnier the better!

Scavenger Hunt

A fun hen party game which can keep you amused throughout the day

If your hen do is set to take place across a variety of locations (maybe you are spending the day in London or taking your hen do abroad) then a scavenger hunt is an excellent activity to tie the event together and keep the group interested and engaged throughout.

A scavenger hunt can take many forms. One idea is to have funny tasks for just the bride-to-be to complete in each location, or split the group into teams and set challenges for each team everywhere you go.

Bride-to-Be Quiz

A quiz to test how well the hens know the bride-to-be

Whether you’ve known each other since school or you worked together as adults, this game is sure to get some giggles as you try to guess the answers to a list of questions about the bride. Get creative with your questions to make the game extra interesting.

The Present Game

Kill two birds with one stone with this sweet and thoughtful hen party game

This game doubles up as an opportunity to present the bride-to-be with some gifts to celebrate her pending nuptials. Each of the hens should buy a little gift for the bride and wrap it without their name on it (perhaps place a budget restriction for the hens that are more strapped for cash). During the party place all the gifts in the middle and let the bride-to-be pick out one gift at a time to open and then guess who bought it for her.

Banned Words Challenge

A frustrating hen party game classic

At the beginning of the hen do, choose a selection of words that are banned from the event and each time someone uses one of the forbidden words, get them to drink or do a forfeit. The more relevant and difficult the words the better. For example, try banning the words: wedding, drink, hen or man, and see how hard it is for the girls to stick to the rules! This game can either last as long as you like, or as long as you can take the frustration.

We have long been fans of pastel shades, from baby pinks and blues, to subtle yellows and cool minty greens; what’s not to love? No matter what season you’re wedding, there is a pretty pastel colour for everyone.

We love pastel shades most when they are combined together… do you remember how pretty a packet of Refreshers look?

A Lakeside Spring Wedding Shoot in Italy

This post A Lakeside Spring Wedding Shoot in Italy first appeared on The Wedding Community Blog

Bride and groom in rowing boat on lake in Italy

Are you dreaming of a wedding far away? Well, actually, Italy is not that far! After seeing the pictures of this fabulous lakeside styled wedding shoot in Italy, you will definitely be dreaming about it.

Picturesque scenery and styling that is so exquisitely pretty; soft colours, cute rustic lakeside ceremony set-up, gorgeous china and dreamy florals.

Our thanks go to Tiziana Gallo for sharing these gorgeous pictures.

Sweet dreams!

“For this wedding shoot at Lago di Candia (Lake of Candia) in Italy we wanted to use natural details, lines, colours and combinations to create a harmonious spring environment. The bride and groom’s natural surroundings were the most important aspect of the shoot, and all of the details, including the rippling water, ducks on the lake, and light from the sunset, feel consistent; almost peaceful.

“The main colours were yellow and green, characterising the preparation in every aspect, with the china, flowers and wedding dress reflecting care and softness.”
