Company Name: Jess Yarwood Photography
Interview with: Jess Yarwood
Location / Coverage: Based in Cheshire but cover the whole of the UK and Beyond
Had you always wanted to be a photographer?
I never set out to be a wedding photographer. Originally I worked in the wedding industry as a wedding planner and just had a passion for photography that I decided to pursue. I have been a wedding photographer for nearly four years now.
Can you remember how old you were when you took your first picture? What was it of?
This is one of my first images I took when I started my photography business. It’s of my daughter when she was playing in the park. It’s an image I always refer back to; I love it.
Which areas of the UK do you cover?
I am based in Cheshire but I cover the whole of the UK and also destination weddings.
What do you feel sets you apart from other wedding photographers?
It’s a hard question to answer, but I feel people book me because of my relaxed vibe and consistency with my work. My shooting and editing style is very me, and I believe people book me for that. I have a lot of photography friends who all have their own unique style; it is a lovely industry to be in.
How would you describe your photography style?
Relaxed, natural and fun. I love to laugh and make my couples at ease and I think this shows in my work.
I like to capture the day as it flows. There will be no forced smiles, no formal line ups and certainly no cheese. I love to work with laid back, creative couples who enjoy nothing more than being surrounded by loved ones and are ready to party.
We will have just enough formal photos to please the parents and then the rest will be you having an amazing day! I work with natural light and love real moments; nothing too staged.
What packages do you offer and what are your rates?
I offer full day coverage, from morning preparations until dancing in the evening. I love to tell a whole story through my images. Each couple receives a beautiful bespoke wooden box with 10 6×4 fine art prints and their USB of images.
What is the best thing about your job?
I would say meeting new people. I am definitely a people person… and people watcher!
Do you have a specialist area of photography?
I cover weddings and lifestyle shoots of families; this keeps me busy! I love real, honest imagery, and with both of these avenues I can capture people and memories.
Who/what are your influences?
I love the work of Vivian Maier, an American street photographer, and also the work of wedding photographer Fer Juaristi. I am constantly looking at all types of art, street photography and wedding photography to gain inspiration.
Do you have a favourite picture that you have taken (if you can choose!)?
My favourite images are always ones I take where the person doesn’t know or are less pre-planned. The image I always refer to is this one of Milli. She was putting her dress on and she did a little wiggle! We laughed and it captured such a natural moment before she married her man.
What is your top tip for choosing a wedding photographer?
Base your choice on the style you love as your images will be the one thing you look back on. The photographer, I believe, is one of the most important choices a couple will make.
Random question… How would your friends describe you?
Fun, relaxed, honest, reliable and bubbly (I did asked them!).
What’s your typical day like?
Obviously most Fridays and Saturdays I am at weddings, and I usually try to take Sundays off to spend with my family. Monday to Thursday I reply to emails from the weekend, blog, edit and manage my website. I meet new couples in the evenings midweek so life can be a little crazy during the summer months.
